The G.I.F.T.S.® Technique

Energy Psychology and the development of the GI.F.T.S.® technique

In 1944, Max Planck, regarded by many as the ‘father of modern quantum theory’, shocked the world by saying:

“There is a matrix of energy that provides the blueprint for our physical world. In this place of PURE ENERGY, everything begins, from the birth of the stars and DNA, to our deepest relationships…our personal healing”.

The idea that there was an invisible field of energy connecting everything in the Universe, including our thoughts and feelings, turned centuries of scientific dogma on its head: many of the ‘old guard’ within the scientific and medical communities were strongly resistant to the ideas proposed by quantum theory. However, his ideas were supported by many luminaries in the fields of science and medicine:

Professor William Tiller said: “Future medicine will be based on controlling energy in the body”

Professor Harold Burr said: “The energy field starts it all”

Murray Gell Mann, Nobel Prize Laureate, said: “Body chemistry is governed by quantum cellular fields” –

George Crile Snr. MD, Cleveland Clinic Founder said: “Diseases are to be diagnosed and prevented by energy field assessment”

Albert Szent Gyorgyi MD, Nobel Prize Laureate, said: “Treating humans without the concept of energy is treating dead matter. In every culture and in every medical tradition before ours, healing was accomplished by moving energy”

The birth of energy psychology

It was from the belief that trapped energy from unresolved emotions can block the flow of 'vital energy' and rob people of clarity, that 'energy psychology’ was born. Energy psychologists believed that once the blocked energy from unresolved emotions was released, people often had great insights into why they were unable to resolve the emotional issues in the first place. Months, or years of 'talk therapy', were often able to be reduced to a few sessions.

One of the early pioneers of 'energy psychology' was Dr Roger Callahan. Callahan was a respected psychologist who came up with the idea for ‘Thought Field Therapy’. Many other techniques followed on from Thought Field Therapy; one of the most popular of was called EFT [ Emotional Freedom Technique, which is often called 'Tapping' ].

Energy psychology techniques merged the ideas of TCM [Traditional Chines Medicine] with quantum theory. For millennia, TCM practitioners believed that poor health was caused by blockages in the 'vital energy system', which they call ‘qi’. Energy psychologists believed many of these blockages were caused by the emotions we fail to reflect on. Reflecting on our problems with a view to resolving them was common until a few decades ago. Unfortunately, modern lifestyles are not conducive to spending time reflecting on problems with a view to resolution. As a result emotional problems remain unresolved. This leads to one of two options: people either dwell on their problems, often amplifying them and making themselves -and others- miserable in the process, or they 'bury' them, so they can 'move on'. Unfortunately emotions buried alive don't die: they have a nasty habit of resurfacing, when we are at our most vulnerable.

In recent years, the idea that our buried emotions can cause physical illness has gained increasing acceptance, including the established medical community. Dr Eric Robbins M.D. said: “Someday the medical profession will wake up and realise that unresolved emotional issues are the main cause of 85% of all illnesses”.

As a nutritional therapist and bioresonance practitioner, I often wondered if unresolved emotions might be the reason some people failed to respond as well as others to my bioresonance and /or nutritional therapy treatments.

I became quite excited by the idea of energy psychology and studied many of the most popular techniques of the day. The key to EFT, aka Tapping - was to be ‘as specific as possible’ about the emotional events you had buried over the years. Being specific about an emotional event you have buried, identifies the trapped feeling. Once identified, tapping on 'energy points' while focusing on the feeling, appears to break-up the energy pattern that was holding the trapped feeling in place.

While tapping could be miraculous in providing ‘instant relief’ from bothersome feelings, many people found that the feelings they had released with tapping often cake back. I became more and more convinced that the key to ensuring that bothersome feelings didn't 'come back', was to identified the most deeply buried feelings; these often underpin many of our most bothersome feelings. Many of our most traumatic feelings [remember that events we, as adults, might consider inconsequential, can seem very traumatic to a young child ] happen before the age of six years old. Unfortunately, at such a young age, we can't think rationally, so we often make 'mountains out of molehills' at an emotional level, and we can carry these mountains with us throughout our lives, unless they are identified and transformed.

For years, I often wished I could find a way to allow people to remember their most deeply buried feelings.

The birth of the GI.F.T.S.® technique

The solution came to me out of the blue one day when I was helping a client connect with a bothersome feeling she ‘couldn’t quite put her finger on’. She said the feling was ‘fleeting’ but that every time she experienced the feeling,it put her in a ‘black mood’ and sent her into a ‘tailspin of negative thinking’…

I am a linguist; finding the right word was always important anytime I was translating, I believed the same was true when it came to helping people zero-in on their feelings. I found that coming up with the right word could help people zero-in on their buried feelings, so I always kept a thesaurus to hand when working with energy psychology clients

… This was the third time I had worked with this particular client, so I had some idea of what the elusive feeling might be. While she was talking, I flicked through my thesaurus and chose four words I thought might be close to her elusive feeling. When I read out the 3rd word, my client cried out “YES! THAT’S IT!! THAT’S EXACTLY THE FEELING!!!” The rest of the session went like clockwork: she identified and released another four trapped feelings.

After that, I spent a lot of time researching the power of words. I remembered a research study I had heard about some years before which I remember thinking ‘how interesting’. That study was even more interesting now, as it related to the new journey I decided to embark on: to uncover the power of words.

The study was by Russian biophysicist and molecular biologist Pyotr Garjajev and his International team of scientists and linguists. Their research was to study the impact of vibration and language on human DNA: Garjajev believed this would reveal more about the 90% of DNA scientists believed was ‘junk DNA’. Among their many fascinating discoveries was the fact that human DNA can be changed and rearranged with spoken words and phrases. They stressed that the key was in using words and phrases that aroused the correct frequency/vibration. To read more about Garjajev’s work:

My interest in how words can identify buried emotions, and be a catalyst for improving our health, coincided with my growing interest in Eugene Gendlin’s ‘Focusing’; Charlotte Selver's ‘Sensory Awareness’, and Peter Levine’s ‘Somatic Experiencing’. I began to have an idea of how I could use words to even greater effect, so I decided to take a two-year sabbatical to research and develop my idea. The sabbatical turned into 4 years, but I believe it was well worth it. I called the technique I developed 'The GI.F.T.S.® technique'. The book I wrote -about the technique - will be published shortly. Below is the cover design:

The Formula for happiness?
The GI.F.T.S. technique enables you to identify feelings that are blocking the flow of vital energy in your body. Once you have identified your trapped feelings, the technique guides you through a process which allows your trapped feelings to transform by themselves. If necessary, your body-mind will provide insights about the feeling. Often, you may already have acquired insights while the feeling itself remained trapped, so allowing the feeling to transform may be all that is required. After a session, most people say they feel much lighter and have more clarity.
